On Thursday, October 19th, 1978, Isaac Asimov gave the keynote address at the North Carolina Governor's Conference on Library and Information Services. Originally entitled "Citizens' Participation and Support for Libraries," Asimov renamed his address to "Of Past and Future Libraries".
"Dr. Isaac Asimov, noting that the Governor had done very well on the present state of libraries, gave a stimulating discussion of the past and future of the book. His was a clarion call to open up new vistas so that all citizens can pass from their limited experience to the totality of human knowledge. The librarian as mediator between man and the machine was one of his many themes." - From the conference report
